Precision Stem Mastering for Modern Productions
Bridge the gap between a standard stereo master and a full remix. Stem mastering allows for surgical control over your mix groups, ensuring every element sits perfectly in the sonic landscape before the final polish.
Book Your Session
Stem mastering is the sophisticated middle ground of the post-production process. Unlike traditional stereo mastering, where the engineer works with a single two-channel file, stem mastering involves processing grouped stems—typically drums, bass, vocals, and instruments—separately. This approach provides the engineer with the ability to address specific balance issues that are impossible to fix once the mix is bounced to a stereo file.
At Bambochezone, we utilise our 22m² control room equipped with ATC SCM25A monitoring to ensure that every decision made during the stem mastering process translates across all playback systems. By isolating the core energy of your track, we can apply targeted compression, EQ, and spatial enhancement to specific groups, resulting in a master that retains the punch of the original mix while achieving the loudness and clarity required for commercial release.
Who is Stem Mastering For?
This service is specifically designed for independent artists, producers, and small labels who feel their mix is "almost there" but lacks that final professional edge. It is ideal for those who have a mix they love but find that the vocals are slightly buried, the low-end is inconsistent, or the overall energy doesn't translate to club systems. Because we work with groups rather than a single file, we can rescue mixes that might otherwise require a complete re-mixing session.
It is also a powerful tool for electronic music producers and beatmakers who need their tracks to compete in high-pressure environments. Whether you are preparing a track for a festival mainstage or a cinematic soundtrack, stem mastering provides the necessary control to ensure the transients are sharp and the frequency spectrum is balanced without compromising the artistic intent of the producer.
The Stem Mastering Workflow
File Submission
You provide the separated stems (typically 4 to 8 files) ensuring they are aligned and exported at the required sample rate and bit depth.
Analysis & Balancing
We analyse the frequency interaction between the stems, correcting phase issues and adjusting the relative levels of each group.
Targeted Processing
Applying specific dynamics and tonal shaping to each stem before routing them into the final mastering chain for cohesive glue.
Final Polish & Delivery
The final master is rendered, checked for true peak compliance, and delivered in high-resolution formats alongside the loudness report.
What You Need to Prepare
To ensure the highest quality result and maintain our average turnaround of 5 business days, your files must meet specific technical requirements. We require stems to be exported as WAV files with a sample rate of 44.1kHz or higher and a bit depth of 24-bit. This preserves the dynamic range and prevents quantization errors during processing.
Crucially, all stems must be exported with the same length, starting from the exact same point (zero) so they remain in perfect sync when imported into our DAW. We strongly recommend leaving at least -6dB of headroom on your stems to avoid clipping during the mastering stage. Please ensure that all time-based effects (reverbs, delays) are baked into the respective stems unless you specifically require them to be handled separately.
What is Included in the Service
- Detailed spectral analysis of all submitted stems.
- Corrective EQ and dynamic processing per stem group.
- Stereo imaging enhancement for width and depth.
- Final limiting and loudness optimisation for commercial standards.
- Up to 3 rounds of revisions to ensure the result meets your vision.
- High-resolution WAV (24-bit) and MP3 delivery.
- A detailed loudness report (LUFS and True Peak).
Deliverables and Final Output
Upon completion, you will receive a professional master file ready for distribution. The primary delivery is a 24-bit WAV file, which serves as the archival master. We also provide a high-quality MP3 for quick review and sharing. If requested, we can provide an instrumental version of the master, provided the instrumental stems were included in the original submission.
Every project is accompanied by a technical report. This document outlines the integrated loudness (LUFS) and the true peak levels, giving you peace of mind that your track will not be excessively attenuated by streaming algorithms or distorted on vinyl. We provide these metrics to ensure transparency and technical accuracy in every delivery.
Timeline and Turnaround
Our standard turnaround time for stem mastering is 5 business days from the moment the deposit is received and the files are verified. This window allows our engineers to let the tracks "rest" between processing stages, ensuring that ears remain fresh and decisions are objective. For projects with urgent deadlines, a rush fee of 30% is applied, which prioritises your project in our queue.
The revision process is integrated into this timeline. Once you receive the first version, you have 3 rounds of adjustments included in the base price. We encourage consolidated feedback to make the most of these rounds and ensure the project moves efficiently toward final approval.
What is NOT Included
It is important to distinguish stem mastering from a full mix. Stem mastering does not include the ability to move individual elements within a stem (e.g., we cannot move the snare drum if it is baked into the "Drums" stem). If your track requires a complete re-balance of every single track, we recommend our Professional Mixing service instead.
Additionally, this service does not include the creation of new arrangements, the addition of new instruments, or the recording of new vocal takes. We work with the audio provided; any significant changes to the composition must be completed before the files are sent to Bambochezone.
Pricing and GST
Our pricing is transparent and designed for professional transparency. All prices listed below include the 10% GST (Goods and Services Tax) applicable in Australia. For B2B clients, payment terms are 14 days from the invoice date. A 50% deposit is required to commence work on any project.
| Service Level | Price (inc GST) | Price (ex GST) | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Stem Master | A$250 | A$227.27 | per track |
Please note that if the project exceeds the included 3 rounds of revisions, additional hours are billed at our standard editing rate. For full details on our payment and cancellation policies, please visit our Terms and Conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many stems should I provide?
Typically, 4 to 8 stems are ideal (e.g., Drums, Bass, Synths, Vocals, FX). Providing too many stems turns the process into a full mix, while too few may limit the corrective power of stem mastering.
Can you handle stems for different genres?
Yes, our workflow is adaptable to everything from electronic and hip-hop to rock and cinematic scores. We adjust our processing chain based on the genre's sonic requirements.
What happens if my stems are not in sync?
We cannot process stems that are not aligned. If the files are out of sync, we will notify you within 24 hours and request a corrected export before the project begins.
Do you keep my stems after the project?
We store your project files and stems for 12 months. This allows for future adjustments or the creation of different versions if your distribution needs change.
